Heat Pump Blowing Cold Air? Why It Won't Switch Modes

By Efrain Sarceno · Infinite Heating & Air · September 23, 2026 · Rockville, MD

Heat pump blowing cold air in heating mode, or running nonstop? What usually keeps a heat pump from switching modes in Rockville homes, and what to check.

When a Heat Pump Gets Its Modes Mixed Up

Your heat pump blows cool air in heating mode, or warm air when you want cooling. A heat pump does both jobs with the same system, so the switch between modes matters. When that switch does not happen, the house never gets the air you asked for. It can be easy to miss, because the system still runs and air still moves through the vents.

The usual causes are a faulty reversing valve or a controls issue, such as thermostat wiring or the control board. Heat pump mode-switching calls come up often in Fallsgrove. The symptom you notice is a useful clue to which of these is behind it, so it helps to note when the problem shows up.

Cold Air in Heating Mode

Cold air from the vents when the heat pump is set to heat is a clear sign that something is off. Usually the reversing valve is stuck in the cooling position, so the system keeps cooling even though you asked for heat. The other usual cause is auxiliary heat strips that are not engaging when it gets colder outside. If it is the strips, you may notice the problem most on colder days.

Both of these problems can be diagnosed on-site. Efrain tests the reversing valve and the heat strips to find out which is behind the cold air. That way the repair targets the actual fault instead of a guess, and you are not paying for parts the system does not need.

Backup Heat on the Coldest Days

Heat pumps lose efficiency as outdoor temperatures drop. On the coldest days, most systems need supplemental heat to hold the setting. This is normal, and it does not mean the heat pump is failing. That backup usually comes from electric heat strips or a gas backup.

If the backup heat is not engaging, the heat pump can run and run without ever warming the house to the setting. That is a separate controls or electrical issue. Efrain can diagnose it and confirm whether the backup heat is getting the signal to come on when the heat pump needs help.

When a Heat Pump Runs Nonstop

A heat pump that runs continuously is not always a problem. On a very cold day, running nonstop is normal, because heat pumps adjust their output to match the conditions. On a mild day, though, a heat pump that never stops signals a problem. Paying attention to the weather when it runs nonstop is the simplest way to tell the difference.

Catching it early keeps the system from working hard for no reason and helps it keep up when the weather really turns cold. Efrain checks each likely cause rather than guessing which part is to blame. On a mild day, the cause is usually on this short list:

  • Low refrigerant
  • A failing reversing valve
  • A controls issue that keeps it from running efficiently

Controls, Wiring and the Thermostat

A thermostat that will not respond is often a symptom of something else. Efrain checks the whole system rather than defaulting to a thermostat replacement, including power, wiring and how the system responds. The thermostat is rarely the actual problem, so swapping it right away can leave the real issue in place.

Wiring can also cause trouble after an upgrade. A new smart thermostat on an older system can be a wiring mismatch, especially without a C-wire or with a proprietary control board. When that happens, the heat may not come on even though the thermostat looks fine. Efrain can get the new thermostat communicating correctly with the heat pump.

How Efrain Diagnoses a Heat Pump

Start by describing the symptom and what the weather was doing at the time, since that helps point to the cause. On-site, Efrain checks reversing valve operation, refrigerant charge and the controls sequence, and he confirms the backup heat is working. For a major component failure, he gives you an honest repair versus replacement comparison so you can decide what makes sense. The repair is then finished, and both heating and cooling modes are tested before he leaves.

You get the price before any work starts, with no surprise at the end. Efrain works across Rockville, MD, including College Gardens, East Rockville, Fallsmead, Fallsgrove and Flower Valley, so if your heat pump is blowing the wrong air, call (240) 431-3658. Every heat pump visit ends with these checks:

  • Reversing valve and controls checked
  • Backup heat confirmed working
  • Heating and cooling both tested before he leaves
